The final Harrow expedition for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award took place at the end of April, with seven pupils successfully qualifying for the award. Since opening its doors in August 2016, this was the first time any Harrow pupils had completed the award. “I am very proud of all of them for the dedication and hard work that they put in to it” said Ms Rosina Hasell, the Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator.
They were based in Moganshan, a beautiful area four hours away from Shanghai, where they hiked for two days in great weather conditions. The route took them through bamboo forests and alongside rivers, waterfalls and past small villages. At the end of the first exhausting day of hiking the pupils camped in a local farmer’s field. “I was very impressed with the accuracy of their orienteering, as it’s not always easy map reading in a country without many local, up-to-date maps”, said Ms Hasell.
Taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award provided the pupils with opportunities to solve problems collaboratively, face challenges with determination and contribute positively to the community. These are three of Harrow’s aims for the pupils when studying at the school. The award also provided the them with valuable time to work as a team and they are very much looking forward to completing the Silver Duke of Edinburgh award next year.
